Can you spare some sugar? A few words on neighbourhood savoir-vivre

Connecting with our neighbours and cultivating our relationships with them today looks entirely different than 10 years ago. Now we all live our separate lives and we tend not to pay much attention to people living outside our home’s walls. And that’s a huge mistake. It’s that we never know when our neighbour’s helping hand is going to be needed.

So, how to start building positive relationships with our neighbours? Check out some of our tips on how to do it.

Small talk about weather is not so bad after all

A simple smile, a “good morning” spoken at the stairs, or a quick chat in the elevator — small things, but they can truly make a miracle. This way you’ll show your neighbours that you are an open person, ready to make new connections. Such non-committal talk is your first step towards building good relations with your neighbours.

A bit more quiet, please

While renting an apartment, you have to remember that you’re not alone in the building and that you should think about other dwellers. Disturbing quiet hours, loud music, screams from behind the wall — these are the most common issues that people renting an apartment in a block are dealing with. Of course, there are some noises that are impossible to avoid. Apartment renovation underway? Hang a piece of paper on your entrance door with information when it’s going to happen. Make sure not to work on it during late hours and on weekends. Planning a house party? Visit your neighbours and inform them about it. Choose the end time at and hold on to it.

Animal affair

If you’re a pet owner, you have to remember about your pet-related responsibilities. While walking your dog, make sure to take a leash with you, and a bag to clean up faeces left by your pet. Additionally, do your best not to let your four-footed friend wander around the neighbourhood without care. Your neighbours may not be pleased seeing your dog running wild, especially if it’s a representative of a larger breed.

Barbecue on a balcony — let’s say NO to that

Not everyone is fond of a smell of a barbecued sausage or meat. Barbecue on a balcony is not permitted — it can be considered a fire hazard, and lead your neighbours to call appropriate services. Eventually, you may be forced to pay a fine. Instead of barbecuing on a balcony, find a space in your city where it’s allowed to organize events like that.

Remember about respecting a shared space

Try not to occupy a shared space with your stuff. Trash bags, prams, strollers, or bikes left unattended aren’t exactly decorative, and, what’s more important, they’re blocking communication tracts such as corridors or staircases. Instead, try using a storage room, in which you can put everything that doesn’t seem to fit into your apartment.

Exercising all of these tips will help you build and maintain good relations with your neighbours, making your living conditions even more comfortable. We strongly encourage all of you to follow our tips to make everyone’s life better.
